Boston whale watching

There are touristy things to do, and then there are touristy things to do – and if you’re going to do touristy things, then you really need to do something that’s going to be unforgettable and that you are unlikely to experience at many other places you could travel to. For me, one such experience was whale watching in Boston.

Despite loving boat trips, I wasn’t sure if this trip would be the experience I hoped. After all, the boat might have a schedule, but that doesn’t mean to say that the whales have to be obliging and turn up to thrill the visitors as they do at a theme park such as SeaWorld! However, I decided that it was worth the gamble, paid for my ticket and boarded the boat.

It wasn’t such a hot morning but the sunlight was bright reflecting off the ocean so I was glad I had my sunglasses – even so I was squinting a lot at the water hoping to be the first person to spot a whale! Typically it was whilst I was in the midst of purchasing something to drink that the first whale was spotted, so I quickly left the drink and went to watch. What a beautiful sight. They didn’t come right up to the boat, but they’re so big that it wasn’t difficult to see them. For all their size they are very graceful and for some reason I felt that being able to watch them move past us was an honor. There were a few people on the cruise that talked, but most people must have felt similar emotions to myself as we stood there silently watching in awe as our boat sailed its course.

I don’t remember returning to the harbor and disembarking. I don’t remember thanking the crew. But if I close my eyes I can still smell the water, and see the sunshine glinting off the ri
